Iom Report Impact on Nursing free essay sample
Right up 'til today there are three kinds of projects that exist to permit a person to rehearse as a RN: the recognition, the Associate degree, and the Baccalaureate degree. The certificate course is a medical clinic based program that readies a person to sit for the NCLEX-RN. It is typically an a multi year program. It readies the understudy for nursing employments for conveying direct patient consideration in the emergency clinic or other inpatient setting. The partner course RN is normally a two-year program that centers around showing the understudy specialized nursing abilities with fundamental instruction prerequisites in math, science, and English. It readies the understudy for passage level nursing occupations in emergency clinics and inpatient offices. The baccalaureate course RN holds the more elevated level of training in nursing. It is accomplished through a progressively thorough instructive examination through exploration and proof based practices that sets them up for administration and the executives positions. In looking at the partner degree nurture versus he baccalaureate degree nurture, so as to build tolerant wellbeing, the partner degree medical caretaker ought to achieve their baccalaureate degree for normalization in with our ceaselessly changing medicinal services frameworks. In thinking back ever, the partner level of nursing (ADN) was structured by Mildred Montag in 1952 to help the nursing deficiency as a university elective (Creasia and Friberg, 2011, p. 27). It began as a pilot venture at seven destinations that has now become fruitful and alluring when contrasted with the 4-year baccalaureate course. The 2-year partner degree course is searched out additional for its cost adequacy while accomplishing a similar objective of having the option to take the NCLEX-RN for licensure. Particularly as studies from the Committee of the American Society of Nursing Service Administration noticed that they saw no distinction among starting professionals from BSN, ADN, or certificate programs (Schank and Stollenwerk, 1988, p. 254). The watchword here is starting specialist, there is no distinction between the exhibitions of the two. Notwithstanding, if an individual wants to progress in their nursing profession, the partner degree isolates the baccalaureate degree holding RN from a higher position and pay for instance in an administrative or administrative job. The baccalaureate degree was planned by the ANA to be the passage point into proficient nursing practice (ANA, 1965). The individuals who pick the BSN course are set up to work on nursing in starting initiative positions. So as to take on a position of authority, the baccalaureate holding medical caretaker needs to have a more inside and out training with aptitudes in correspondence, initiative, and basic reasoning. The incorporation of general wellbeing in the BSN program requires a medical caretaker to be enough proficient to teach past the individual onto the networks and populace. Not exclusively is the BSN nurture ready to impart past the individual yet additionally better ready to team up with those holding higher instructive degrees too. Having the option to convey unmistakably the information scholarly, through basic deduction dependent on proof based practices is the thing that separates a partner degree from a baccalaureate degree nurture. In light of these characteristics, it likewise bears them the capacity to take on positions of authority. Advanced education empowers BSN medical caretakers to go outside the little hover of training. Studies have demonstrated that tolerant results can be ascribed to more elevated levels of nursing instruction. More information improves the nursesââ¬â¢ idea of nursing as a calling to all the more likely adjust to a consistently changing human services condition. More information upgrades the nursesââ¬â¢ idea of nursing as a calling to all the more likely adjust to a constantly changing medicinal services condition and by having involvement with examination of proof based practices gives the attendant a firm establishment. Their insight is more extensive to help advance positive patient results (Spencer, 2008, p. 08). In one investigation they found a ââ¬Å"10% expansion in extent of BSN medical caretakers was related with a 5% decline in probability of deathâ⬠(Ridley, 2008, p. 152). One part of the BSN understudy that the ADN understudy doesn't gain is digging into proof bas ed practices. The BSN nurture, in this manner, is changed from the fundamental clinical parts of nursing from the individual patient onto a more extensive range. Exploration empowers the RN to turn out to be increasingly intelligent by assessing past clinical encounters, focusing on basic speculation aptitudes to assist better with understanding our changing human services condition. In assessing the table from the investigations of the Examples of Activities remembered for the 1999 RN Practice Analysis with Average Frequencies of Performance (Smith, 2002, p. 493), I found that the assignments that necessary progressively basic reasoning and joint effort with higher disciplinary groups, were marginally higher among the BSN gathering. The normal of 3. 73(BSN) versus 3. 40 (ADN) would talk with other social insurance suppliers about customer care, normal 3. 15 (BSN) versus 2. 92 (ADN) would go about as the customers supporter, and 0. 85 (BSN) versus 0. 5 (ADN) would design and build up a wellbeing advancement program dependent on a network evaluation (Smith, 2002, p. 493). Huge numbers of the exercises appeared on the table mirror that there were relatively few contrasts among the ADN and BSN nurture. The BSN nurture has better relational abilities would work together with other disciplinary groups and act all the more frequently as a patient backer. Since the BSN nurture additionally has an increasingly rich comprehension of proof based practices and examination, he/she would be more probable help with building up a wellbeing advancement program. Taking everything into account, despite the fact that it is more cost productive in getting a partners degree or even confirmation to fit the bill for RN licensure, the baccalaureate degree ought to be the standard objective. Our human services framework is persistently transforming, it is the duty of the attendant to likewise endeavor to develop with our natural changes by accomplishing advanced education. Not exclusively does the BSN nurture fit the bill for higher situations in the human services framework, however it likewise creates better patient results.

To Kill a Mocking Bird. expositions It is just plain wrong to slaughter a mockingbird since they don't do anything yet make music for us to appreciate. In Harper Lees epic To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus says the above statement to fundamentally summarize one of the significant topics of the book. To Atticus, a mockingbird is an innocuous fledgling that makes the world an increasingly charming spot to live. All through the book, Jem, Tom, Boo and Scout would all be able to be related with a mockingbird. They have all been honest individuals, who have been broken by contact with malicious. At the point when Tom was blamed for assaulting Mayella Ewell, it resembled a mockingbird itself had been shot and executed. Slashing wood and doing whatever he could do was all Tom had ever accomplished for Mayella. Tom was honest. He had never harmed a spirit, or had the expectations of harming somebody. When he is shot, Mr. Underwood remarks that his demise is tantamount to the silly butcher of warblers. Tom did no damage to anybody, however by aiding Mayella, he wound up kicking the bucket for it. At the point when we are first acquainted with Scout toward the start of the novel, we are presented to a guiltless kid who is unmindful of the malevolence on the planet. When she is confronted with the detestable, it is faulty on whether she will rise a mockingbird or not. With her karma of being raised by Atticuss insight, she discovers that shrewd can here and there be limited with the correct mentality. Despite the fact that Scout is as yet a youngster, she is taking on a point of view of life that an adult ought to have, and that is the way she demonstrates that she is a mockingbird. Jem himself has been scarred by the experience of Toms preliminary. At the point when he sees that equity doesn't generally succeed, he is befuddled and helpless. No different, he despite everything remains steadfast with the certainty that Atticus has ingrained in him, as he has likewise finished with Scout. Boo was another character that Lee related with a mockingbird. Boo was a man who was seen by society to be risky. In any case, in all actuality, Boo was ... <!

Is a legend an individual who wears tights and a cape and circumvents sparing the world? Also, is a lowlife an individual who plans insidious plots against the saint? Despite the fact that legends and miscreants may be seen diversely through the eyes of unique individuals, we as a whole realize that not all saints and lowlifess are perceived for their activities. A legend can be someone as large as Superman or somebody like your mom and a miscreant can be someone like Charles Manson or an anecdotal character, for example, DR Evil from Austin Powers. There are various sorts of individuals on the planet and now and then you are at the correct spot at the ideal time and accomplish something great or you can settle on wrong choices and accomplish something that is terrible. The legend and lowlife I will talk about with you, my crowd, is Michael Jordan and Jeffery Dahmer. Two very notable individuals. Michael Jordan is an icon to me as well as to numerous others of a wide range of ages. He was an extraordinary b-ball player driving the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles and en route; he was MVP of the association various occasions. He is the best player as I would see it to ever play the game. In any case, He isn't just a decent b-ball player he is additionally a decent agent. He was a delegate of ballpark wieners, Gatorade, and Nike just to give some examples. He was continually searching for chances to bring in cash as any great specialist does. Indeed, even now, he is the co-proprietor of the Washington Wizards. However this isn't the reason I admire him, I admire this man since he is a diligent employee. He put numerous long stretches of work into his game ordinary, working out to show signs of improvement even on game days dissimilar to nearly everyone in the class. He was continually attempting to improve. He additionally was constantly a decent entertainer. You will never obse rve him in a meeting or in an image with something awful to state or with out a grin all over. He realized numerous more youthful children admired him and he put forth an attempt not to baffle anybody, continually having a decent positive mental demeanor. He is only an inside and out outstanding individual. The scalawag I will talk about with you is Jeffery Dahmer. He was an extremely wiped out and contorted individual.

Chemistry Tutor 3 Rules to Get You Through Organic Chemistry
Spanish, French, Italian...and Organic Chemistry? I'm sitting in the middle of the classroom. I look at my mug holding the remnant grinds of the coffee I finished in my previous lecture and briefly regret not stopping at the cafà © to get a refill. The teacher in the front of the lecture hall drones on with her opening joke ââ¬â something about two chemists walking into the bar. I shift nervously in my seat and look at the full room. There are so many different majors represented here, from the sciences to engineering to the pre-med students. The punchline of the joke is told, something about H2O2 (what is that?) and the kids in the front of the room laugh. I join in nervously even though I must have missed the point. I look around, I'm not the only one who didn't get it which makes me feel better for some reason. I sigh and take out my notebook. This class is dreaded by all undergraduates whose futures depend on their grade in it. This class is a rite of passage. This class is Organic Chemistry. That was my first Organic Chemistry class in 2011. I'm happy to report that I did indeed make it through that rite of passage, as well as Organic Chemistry II and Organic Chemistry Lab the following semesters. It's all thanks to one powerful piece of guidance my teacher gave me when I came to office hours after my poor performance on the first homework assignment. I now have the opportunity to pass on this knowledge as an organic chemistry tutor in Boston. The following advice is for students anxiously awaiting their Organic Chemistry class next semester (or later on). Before you enter the Organic Chemistry classroom this Fall, you must rethink how you view the class. This is not some science class where you'll succeed through intuitively understanding concepts. This is a language course. Yes, you read that right. You must approach this class as you would a course in French or Spanish. Learning how atoms interact and react with each other is just like learning how words in a foreign language interact and affect each other. There is a lot of memorization involved. Let me repeat this. There is A LOT of memorization involved in Organic Chemistry. Once you realize this, the complexities of the reactions and elements will seem more simple. It's just like when you learned to conjugate estar (or à ªtre, or sein). At first it seems foreign, but soon it becomes second nature. So now with this new approach to Organic Chemistry, here's a list of the Top Three Habits to cultivate while studying: 1. Dedicate time simply for memorization. Make flashcards if needed, put on your favorite study jam, and flip through the vocabulary and reactions. You cannot speak German if you do not know vocabulary. There is a lot of vocabulary to learn in Organic Chemistry. If you're not good at memorization (like me), come up with creative mnemonics. Study the general reactions (substitution, elimination, dehydration, etc.) and remember that for every rule there is an exception. Learn the exceptions. 2. Practice makes perfect. You cannot learn French by simply sitting in lectures and reading the textbook. You have to engage in conversational French with someone. Similarly, you must work with someone else to learn Organic Chemistry. Find a study partner, make use of office hours, or find a tutor. Sit down with them and talk through the reactions you are learning. Draw the reactions with them. Quiz each other. Getting a model kit can be helpful. 3. Remember all the parts of learning a new language: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. You must practice each of these with respect to Organic Chemistry. With exams mostly testing the "writing" and "reading" parts, it's easy for forget the "listening" and "speaking" parts. However, you must be able to gain mastery in all four areas to fully understand the class. Think about it ââ¬â you have to communicate with your teacher or organic chemistry tutor what areas you do not understand and listen to their explanations. On the flip side, if you wish to help a friend you have to understand where they are struggling and explain to them the concept. If you change your approach to Organic Chemistry, dedicate the time, and utilize your resources, you will be able to ace this milestone in your undergraduate career. Be open to this new idea. I know too many intelligent classmates that approached the class in the same way they approached their general science courses. They were sitting in the same classroom the next semester, retaking the class, listening to the same opening joke. Speaking of which, in case you were wondering: Two chemists walk into a bar. One sits down and asks the bartenter for "some H20." The second follows suit and asks for "some H20 too." He takes a sip, and dies. H202 is hydrogen peroxide, which will kill you if you consume it. ;

These words spoken at the conclusion of the Wachowski Brothersââ¬â¢ 1999 film, The Matrix, by the main character Neo represent a deeper meaning and a connection to ancient literature many people viewing the film might not realize. This quote relates to a work of literature more than two millennia old, the narrative by Plato called The Allegory of the Cave. Conversely, differences also exist between the plots of The Allegory of the Cave and The Matrix. While both the men in the allegory and Neo live from birth in their seclusion, The Matrix differs slightly from the allegory, as Neo has a feeling that the matrix exists, and actively tries to discover what the matrix is, while the men in the cave do not try, or even think to try to escape their bondage. Additionally, when Morpheus frees Neo from the matrix Neo has the option to stay ignorant, however he choses knowledge for himself by taking the red pill that allows Morpheus to show him ââ¬Å"how deep the rabbit hole goesâ⬠(The Matrix). In contrast, the man in Platoââ¬â¢s Allegory stands freed by his captors, and is forced into the light. Finally, when Neo returns to the matrix after his enlightenment, he understands the matrix better than he did before his enlightenment. Ha3042 Taxation Law ABC Ltd Samples for Students â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.c
Question: Discuss about the Ha3042 Taxation Law. Answer: Issue The issue is to ascertain the fringe benefits liability for the employer ABC Ltd for the non-cash benefits provided to employee Alan in the income year 2017. Further, the applicability of FBT liability needs to be calculated for the given scenarios. Rule The non-cash benefits which the employer has granted to the employer for the private utilization only would be termed as fringe benefits. These benefits extend the fringe benefits liability on the employer while no incremental tax burden is levied on employee (CCH, 2013). Mobile Handset Mobile Bill In accordance to the Section 58X of Fringe Benefits Assessment Act 1986, FBT liability would not be imposed on employer, if the employer has granted the mobile handset or any electronic device to employee in regards to do work related activities. Hence, the payment of handsets bill by employer would also not create any FBT liability on employer (Barkoczy, 2015). Payment of School Fee An expense incurred in paying school fee is considered to be a private nature expense of employee. When employer has paid this amount, then FBT liability would be imposed on employer under the aegis of expenses fringe benefits (Gilders et.al., 2016). FBT liability (payment of school fee) = FBT rate * Fee amount *Gross up rate FBT rate and Gross up rate are variables that depend on the underlying income year for which computation is being performed (Nethercott, Richardson and Devos, 2016). Meal Expense When employer hosts meal for business clients, employees or associated of employee and if the location of meal is not in the office area, then meal fringe benefits would be assumed to have been extended by the employer. It is necessary that the expense incurred must be higher than $300 or else no FBT liability would arise under the provision of minor fringe benefits exemption clause (Sadiq et.al., 2016). FBT liability under meal fringe benefits would be determined with the help of two methods furnished below: Actual Method 50-50 Split Method Brief discussions of these methods are outlined below: Actual Method According to this method, whole of the amount would be taken to find fringe benefits liability. Further, when meal has been hosted for employee (or /and their partners) then tax deduction would be applicable for employer during the taxable income computation. As, a result, the employer opts for paying FBT on the complete amount (Deutsch et. al., 2016). FBT liability (Meal fringe benefits) = FBT rate* Total meal expense* Gross up rate 50-50 Split Method As the name suggest, only half of meal expenses would be taken to find FBT liabilities. Therefore, to decrease the amount of FBT liabilities and take benefits, employer adopts this method when the meal has hosted for clients as no tax deduction applicable for meal expenses on clients and thus, the intent is to reduce the overall FBT liability (Woellner, 2014). FBT liability (Meal fringe benefits) = FBT rate* 50%* Total meal expense* Gross up rate Application Mobile Handset Mobile Bill It is apparent from the given facts that employer ABC Ltd has granted a mobile handset to Alan only for work related purpose. Therefore, under the applicability of section 58X of FBTAA 1986, extension of mobile handset would not be categorised as a fringe benefit and hence, no FBT liability would be levied on employer. Similarly, the mobile bill payment would also not be a fringe benefit because Alan does not make private calls from the handset. Payment of School Fee School fees payment by employer would create FBT liability on employer because it is a expenses fringe benefit. FBT liability (payment of school fee) = FBT rate * Fee amount *Gross up rate FBT rate (for FY2017) = 49% Fee amount = $20,000 Gross up rate (GST free, type 2 goods, FY2017) = 1.9608 FBT liability (payment of school fee) = 0.49 * 20000 * 1.9608= $19,215.84 Dinner Location of dinner hosted by ABC Ltd - Thai Restaurant (outside from office) It is apparent that ABC Ltd has extended meal fringe benefits and hence, FBT liability would be applicable on employer. 1st case 20 employee and respective partners Meal expense (for 40 people) = $6600 Meal expenses (only for 20 employees) = $3300 Spending incurred per employee = $3300/20 = $165 Expense is lower than $300 and therefore, minor fringe benefits exemption would be validated and FBT would not be created on employer. 2nd case 5 employees Meal expense (for 10 people) = $6600 Meal expenses (only for 5 employees) = $3300 Spending incurred per employee = $3300/5 = $660 Amount is higher than $300 and hence, FBT liability would impose on employer. Actual method FBT liability (Meal fringe benefits) = FBT rate* Total meal expense* Gross up rate FBT rate = 49% Total meal expense = $6600 Gross up rate (GST valid, type 1 goods, FY2017) = 2.1463 FBT liability (Meal fringe benefits) = 0.49 * 6600 *2.1463 = $ 6,941.1 3rd case Clients To reduce the FBT burden, ABC Ltd would choose 50-50 Split method. 50-50 Split method FBT liability (Meal fringe benefits) = FBT rate* 50%* Total meal expense* Gross up rate FBT liability (Meal fringe benefits) = 0.49* 0.5*6600 *2.1463 = $ 3,470.6 Conclusion Based on the above ground, it can be concluded that employer ABC Ltd is liable to pay fringe benefits tax liability only for school fees and for meal. There would no FBT liability arising for mobile handset extension and its payment under section 58X of FBTAA 1986. Also, the FBT liability for meal would depend on number of head counts and invitees. Issue The issue is to comment on the nature of the proceeds received from the liquidation of tennis courts and to find whether the derived income is ordinary income under section 6(5) of Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Rule Assessable income would be derived by the taxpayer under the two sections of ITAA, 1997. Section 6(5) The income derived by the taxpayer from ordinary income source would amount to ordinary income. There is no direct mention of sources which highlights the exact source of ordinary income. Hence, verdict of law cases would be taken into account in order to find whether the income source is from ordinary concepts or not (Barkoczy, 2015). Income received from employment of taxpayer would generate ordinary income from personal exertion. Further, any skill (having market worth) of the taxpayer which contributes to the income of taxpayer would also result in ordinary income (CCH, 2013). Income of taxpayer received through the investment would be categorised as ordinary income. This can be rent income, dividends, interest and so forth (Gilders et. al., 2016). Income of taxpayer derived from the business action would be ordinary income. Further, it is noteworthy that the income generated from hobby would not be classified as ordinary income (Nethercott, Richardson and Devos, 2016).. Therefore, it is essential to differentiate between business action and hobby of taxpayer under the provisions of TR 97/11. Generally, profit driven action by the taxpayer is considered a business activity (Sadiq et. al., 2016). Section 15(15) The assessable income could also be derived through the isolated transaction made by the taxpayer mainly with the intention to profit. Hence, when the taxpayer who has performed any activity and involved in the isolated transaction in regards to derive profit, then in such scenario, the nature of the income would be assessable income (Deutsch et. al., 2016). The leading case for the testimony of this understanding is the Westfield Limited v. FCT (1991) FCA 97 case. The pre-requisite is having profit making intention as highlighted under TR 92/3 (Woellner, 2014). Application Relevant facts Peta is the concerned taxpayer who purchased a house located in Kew. The house is having two old tennis courts (poor conditions) at the back. The purpose of Peta is to stay in the house with her family members and to construct new units on the tennis courts and to liquidate them in future to derive profits. Local tennis club was keen to purchase the tennis courts from Peta and therefore, has extended an offer which included a pre-condition that she would have to restore the courts then only will they buy the tennis courts. Peta agreed to the offer and spent nearly $100,000 in the restoration work. She restored the two tennis courts and created fencing around them. The courts then were purchased by tennis club at a total consideration amount of $600,000. There is no proof which highlights that Peta has been running a business of tennis courts restoration and liquidation. Further, she has not worked for a firm which operates the business of tennis courts improvement and selling. Hence, it can be concluded that Peta has not derived the proceeds of $600,000 from ordinary income sources (personal, exertion, investment or business). Therefore, the income is not categorised as ordinary income under section 6(5), ITAA 1997. It can be seen that she has got involved in the restoration process which has resulted in huge profits to her. In this regards, she has made an isolated transaction of $600,000 only to earn profit. Hence, the income is assessable income under the provisions of section 15(15), ITAA 1997. Conclusion It can be cited that income of $600,000 is not ordinary income under section 6-(5). However, none the less, it still would be covered under assessable income as it falls under s. 15(15), TIAA 1997. The Catcher In The Rye Essays (1257 words) - Literary Realism
The Catcher in the rye [emailprotected] In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, Holden attempts, whether he is conscious of it or not, to save certain characters from "falling" into what he sees as the corrupt world of adulthood. He does this in his thoughts as well as in his real actions. An example of this is seen when Holden tries to rescue all children from "falling". The most important child he attempts to save is his sister Phoebe. Last and most crucial, Holden tries to save himself. Holden has a natural instinct to protect people he sees as vulnerable. His main focus is to guard children whom he sees as being pure and innocent and whom he would like to shelter from corruption. His "Catcher in the Rye" image, as far fetched as it seems, is the first concrete expression of Holden's urge to protect the weak. "...What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the Catcher in the Rye..." (Salinger p. 173) Holden's dream is to be "The Catcher in the Rye" ? an adult whose job is to rescue children whenever they begin to fall off a cliff at the end of a rye field. Holden's desire to be "The Catcher in the Rye" symbolizes his urge to "catch" children before they "fall" into adulthood. The field of rye is an open space representing freedom and childhood. The cliff that Holden speaks of implies the boarder from childhood to adulthood. Holden wants to be the catcher or guardian of these children and make sure that they do not cross over to the corrupt world of adulthood. Holden loves children because they are the only people who are not phony. They are innocent and not yet affected by mankind. Like his love for children, Holden's love and respect for Phoebe, his younger sister, is unsurpassed. Phoebe exemplifies Holden's view of a perfect childhood, but problem arises when Holden realizes that Phoebe is already showing signs of growing up. Holden attempts to shield Phoebe from the cruelty of the inevitable realities of life. A way in which Holden tries to prevent this from happening is when he gives Phoebe his red hunting hat. This hat expresses protection and security and a way to hide from society. Since Holden has already been removed from the innocence of childhood, he thinks he knows how demoralized society really is. For example, Holden saw something that drove him crazy. "...Somebody'd written "Fuck you" on the wall. It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other kids would see it, and how they'd wonder what the hell it meant, and finally some dirty kid would tell them-all cockeyed, naturally- what it meant, and how they'd all think about it and maybe even worry about it for a couple of days. I kept wanting to kill whoever had written it..." (Salinger p. 201) Holden is so upset and afraid that Phoebe will see this and be told what it means, exposing her to what Holden refers to as a "corrupt society". Safeguarding Phoebe from unavoidably crossing the threshold from childhood to adulthood is described once again in the scene at the zoo when Phoebe is riding the carrousel and reaching for the gold ring. Holden saw Phoebe as a little kid again which is all he really wanted. "All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she'd fall off the goddam horse, but I didn't say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it's bad if you say anything to them." (Salinger p. 211) The gold ring on the carousel is symbolic. When Phoebe and the other kids were reaching for the ring on the carousel, they almost fell off heir horses. The gold

Free Essays on Freedom Free Essays on Freedom Anytime a person writes an opinion on anything to do with September 11, there is always room for controversial issues that tag along. Declan McCullagh wrote a piece on how national security overrides Americaââ¬â¢s personal liberties in time of war and McCullagh believes that ââ¬Å"During all major wars, the government restricted Americansââ¬â¢ civil liberties in the name of quelling dissent, silencing criticism of political decisions and reserving national securityâ⬠(535). He gives examples that support his claim, examples that are very supportive, though he doesnââ¬â¢t state his stand on the issue. He uses moral equivalence, a very good argumentative defense, to convince his readers of his belief. He compares all the past wars with his belief on how personal liberties have been affected, and proves them throughout his essay. McCullagh gives examples from all of Americaââ¬â¢s major wars (the Civil War, WWI, and WWII) and shows how personal liberties of Americans were in fact affected. Though he doesnââ¬â¢t state whether or not he agrees with the matters he speaks about, he does prove through his examples that the event has actually happened and the personal liberties were indeed affected. His best argument in my eyes is his statement about WWII. Executive order 9066 authorized President Roosevelt and the military to remove Japanese-Americans from Americas west coast, home to Americaââ¬â¢s military bases. As unfair and judgmental that may seem, this act was kept silent until years after the war (537). The personal liberties given to the people of this country are protected by the Constitution of the United States. But at time of war, should congress or the President have the authority to alienate a certain race of people for safety while breaking the rules of war set by our forefathers? Like I said above, anytime a person writes about September 11, or any war for that matter, there is always room for a contradiction in any opinion. McCullagh s... Free Essays on Freedom Governmentââ¬â¢s Opinion of Freedom Vs. The Definition of Freedom In the song ââ¬Å"God Bless the U.S.A.,â⬠the lyrics are ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m proud to be an American where at least I know Iââ¬â¢m free, and I wonââ¬â¢t forget the men who died that gave that right to me.â⬠Many years ago, our four fathers put together the Constitution in order to insure us that we are and always will be free. What does freedom actually mean? Freedom means carrying out ones own actions without coercion or constraint by necessity or circumstances. Today the governmentââ¬â¢s opinions of freedom share some of the same characteristics as the definition, but their opinions have too many limitations to actually classify our country as completely free. The First Amendment of the Constitution was written to guarantee oneââ¬â¢s freedom of religion. This amendment prohibits congress from setting up or supporting an official church. In addition, it forbids congress from passing laws limiting worship. The First Amendment states that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Although this may be true, this does not mean that all religious practices must be allowed. In fact, congress prohibits multitudinous amounts of religious worship. Religious ceremonies of cults, worshiping the devil in prison, and acts similar to the Klu Klux Klan are exceptionally forbidden. For example, Mormons believed that it was a manââ¬â¢s duty to have more than one wife; still the Supreme Court ruled that Mormons had to obey the laws forbidding that practice. The First Amendment also guarantees freedom of speech. It says that congress shall make no law abiding the freedom of speech, or of press; or the right to peacefully assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Nevertheless, the government still manages to limit our country from some protected speech. Often, the time, place, and manner are re... See description - Essay Example And as a result, Hinduism lacks a single trend or an individual whose actions can be attributed to the founding of the religion. Hinduism is believed to have developed during the Iron Age India, hence its classification as the earliest religion in the world. Hindu texts are split into two: the revealed (Ã
Å¡ruti) and remembered (Smriti). Notably, these writings primarily discuss religion, societal values, myths, rites and the significance of temple within the society. Major scriptures are the knowledge (Vedas), philosophies (Upanishads), cosmology (Puranas), aspirations of life (Mahabharata), roles of various people (Ramayana), philosophical dialogue (Bhagavad Gita) and traditional doctrines (Ãâ¬gamas). With about one billion faithful, Hinduism is the third largest spiritual organization in the world. According to Pauwels Hindu faithful generally seek guidance from God and blessings from Devas, though the latter is done occasionally (151). Hinduism is based on numerous practices geared towards inculcating the significance of God in everyday life. The faithful can worship anywhere. At home, followers often set up a place of worship and install icons devoted to their respective God. Temples carry the main deity and other associated ââ¬Ësmallerââ¬â¢ gods. Worshipping at the temples is not mandatory, thus many visit the places only during important religious functions. The faithful do veneration through icons (Murtis), which they believe link man with God. Although, some refer to Hindu religion as henotheistic; that it involves loyalty to one god and allows the existence of others, the perception is a misunderstanding that should be

Young Goodman Brown Essay Example for Free
Young Goodman Brown Essay Young Goodman Brown is a story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne with many interpretations. It is a story of Young Goodman Brownââ¬â¢s adventure that many believe was a journey away from home. Some people believe that he was trying to get at the community and everyday social life. One way to interpret it is that Young Goodman Brown was simply taking a journey in his sleep a dream. When reading this story, there are many ways to interpret it as a dream. Hawthorne says, ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brown came forth, at sunset, into the street of Salemâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (1289) which could literally mean the sun is setting and that night is coming upon him. He also says that Brown ââ¬Å"put his head backâ⬠(1289) which could reference him lying down before bed. After this, he kisses his wife Faith, and leaves her to go on his ââ¬Å"journey. â⬠I feel that he is really kissing her goodnight before he goes to sleep. When he ââ¬Å"looked back, and saw the head of the Faith still peeping after him,â⬠he is really opening his eyes and see that she is still awake. When Goodman Brown sees that Faith is still awake he says ââ¬Å"God bless you and you may find all well, when you come backâ⬠(1289), I interpreted all this as Goodman Brown had been cheating on Faith. In the beginning of the story, Goodman Brown ââ¬Å"came forthâ⬠(1289), or came home, meaning he had not been there the whole time. Goodman Brown even asks Faith, ââ¬Å"dost thou doubt me already, and we but three months married! â⬠Stating the fact that she is starting to doubt Goodman Brown and their relationship. I also interpreted the wifeââ¬â¢s name Faith as faith in their relationship. Goodman Brownââ¬â¢s dream begins when he ââ¬Å"leave[s] her [Faith] on such an errandâ⬠(1289). Leaving her could either be the realization of his cheating, or him falling asleep. When he begins to describe his journey, he says that he ââ¬Å"had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forestâ⬠¦ It was as lonely as could be; and there was peculiarity in such a solitude, that the traveler knows not who may be concealed by the innumerable trunks and the thick boughs overhead; so that, with lonely footsteps he may yet be passing through an unseen multitudeâ⬠(1289). The dreary, gloomy, lonely road represents the road in which he has decided to take by cheating. The people being concealed by the tree trunks represent possible friends of Faithââ¬â¢s that could catch Goodman Brown and tell his wife. The unseen multitude signifies the many lovers. Later in the story, Goodman Brown meets up with his companion that is never given a name. I interpreted the companion as not the devil, which he is portrayed as, but the temptation to cheat. The character is described to have a ââ¬Å"staff, which bears the likeness of a great black snakeâ⬠(1290) which symbolizes deceitfulness when portrayed in stories. When Goodman Brown and the traveler approach the elderly woman, she screams ââ¬Å"The Devil! (1291) The last reference is when the companion ââ¬Å"plucked a branch of mapleâ⬠¦began to strip the twigsâ⬠¦[but] the moment his fingers touched them, they became strangely withered and dried up. â⬠(1292). This represents the traveler taking something good (Goodman Brownââ¬â¢s marriage) and turning it into something bad by ââ¬Ëhis touchââ¬â¢ or the act of cheating. After cheating for a while, Goodman Brown is able to break away from habit and go off into the forest. The dream continues and soon sees people he knows from town and hears Faithââ¬â¢s sorrowful voice surround Goodman Brown. Faith asks him for a favor that she seems to think is unattainable and the ââ¬Ëunseen multitudeââ¬â¢ (earlier described as many lovers) is encouraging her. Goodman Brown starts to shout in desperation and realizes Faith is gone. At that point his dream turns into a nightmare. Goodman Brown laughed, ââ¬Å"when the wind laughed at himâ⬠(1294) and ââ¬Å"there could be nothing more frightful than the figure of Goodman Brown. â⬠(1294) In his dream, Goodman Brown attended church the next day and did not see Faith. Goodman than ââ¬Å"glance[d] at his pale wife, and Faith at him. â⬠He then told her to ââ¬Å"resist the wicked oneâ⬠(1297). This could be interpreted as Faithââ¬â¢s opportunity to cheat and Goodman Brown telling her not too. Goodman Brown soon ââ¬Å"staggered against a rock and felt it chill and damp, while a hanging twig, that had been all on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew. â⬠(1297) This part of the story could be interpreted as him waking up from his dream because he goes back to where the dream began. At the end of the story, Goodman Brown asks himself if he had ââ¬Å"fallen asleep in the forest, [or] only dreamedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He ââ¬Å"shrank from the bosom of Faithâ⬠¦scowled and muttered to himself, and gazed sternly at his wife, and turned awayâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (1298). Goodman Brown realizes his life has been a lie and begins to resent every moment he has with Faith after the realization of his dream. When he dies, â⬠they carve no hopeful verse upon his tomb-stone; for his dying hour was in gloom. â⬠Goodman Brownââ¬â¢s dream changed his life. It made him realize that he had been cheating on Faith, but she, in turn, had the chance to make the same mistake. When he awakens, he loathes his actions he has previously committed and makes his life not only miserable for himself, but for Faith and their family. Young Goodman Brown was young when he fell in love with Faith, but not a good man at all.

Goldenrod :: essays research papers
Goldenrod is common name for certain related plants of the composite family. The Canada goldenrod is really ââ¬Å"Solidago canadensisâ⬠. They are typical autumn flowers of the United States that grow in a great variety of habitats: woods, meadows, hills, and rocky ground. For many years goldenrod was considered a major cause of hay fever, but experiments with goldenrod pollen have indicated that it is virtually harmless. It is so heavy that certain types of bugs actually have to lift it out. It is the state flower of Kentucky and Nebraska. Goldenrods are perennial herbs with wand like stems and stalk-less leaves. They usually grow to a height of 1.2 m (4 ft), but environmental conditions and species variations give them a range of 30 cm to 2 m (1 to 7 ft). Their yellow flowers are in graceful clusters. The genus goldenrods contain about 100 species, most of which are North American in origin. The Canada goldenrod, one of the commonest species, is of average height and has large panicles of small yellow flowers. The smaller sweet goldenrod has anise-scented leaves used to make herb tea. The wreath goldenrod, a low-growing species, is found in shady places. The November goldenrod is the tallest and bears large hairy panicles of flowers. Only one goldenrod species, the European goldenrod, is native to Europe. Several species of goldenrod that have white ray flowers are commonly called silverrod. Goldenrods make up the genus Solidago of the family Compositae. The Canada goldenrod is classified as Solidago canadensis, the sweet goldenrod as Solidago odora, the wreath goldenrod as Solidago caesia, and the November goldenrod as Solidago serotina. The European goldenrod is classified as Solidago virgaurea and the silverrod as Solidago bicolor. Goldenrods attracted short-lived commercial attention when Thomas Edison found that certain species contain latex. Some species (sometimes called dyer's-weed) have yielded a dye, and the leaves of many species have long been used for medicinal preparations and teas.

Uses and Consequences of the Self Fulfilling Prophecy Essay
Uses and Consequences of the Self Fulfilling Prophecy Abstract The Self Fulfilling Prophecy is a concept that should be quite familiar in the classroom, yet is still a mystery to many teachers today. Learning to properly use this idea will ultimately result in higher student scores directly, and on a higher level, will cause students to model the expectations of the teacher and expect much of themselves. This will set students up for highly successful autonomous learning. However, ignorance or improper use of the SFP does not stimulate learning, but may inhibit accomplishment. Teachers must strive to achieve a better understanding of this ââ¬Å"Pygmalion Effectâ⬠to create a powerful learning environment. Uses and Consequencesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Analysis of other teachersââ¬â¢ methods is a solid study base from which teachers can build a working knowledge for use of SFP. Combine these findings with ones own past experiences will result in a much more effective learning environment, one where the students are inspired by the teacher to learn to their maximum potential. On a higher level, this in itself is an example of Pygmalion in practice. The teacher expects more out of himself, through the students, than he is achieving at the moment. Therefore, he raises expectations for himself, and in application he will eventually become stronger for it. The idea of the Pygmalion effect has been around for many years. Even before it was named, many phrases were coined from its principles. ââ¬Å"The first impression is the lasting impressionâ⬠demonstrates just one of the many adversities of the SFP. ââ¬Å"The way others perceive us is largely conditioned by expectations they may have in advance,â⬠(The Pygmalion Effect). All too often, teachers make the mistake that we learn, and even consider a skill, of profiling a student and determining their characteristics, before the first words are spoken (Tauber, 1998). Race, gender, and build, are just a few factors influencing this pre-determination in the first few seconds of contact. Teachers then further this profiling system by the events of the first day. The dà ©jà -vu that just occurred could have actually derived from a past-life memory. ââ¬Å"Dà ©jà -vu experiences are anomalies that have been defined as...spontaneous past life experiencesâ⬠(Haraldsson). Reincarnation is the idea that your soul can be born in a new body after the death of a previous one. This concept originated in ancient cultures of India, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, but it still appears today. Thousands of cases of reincarnation have been recorded all over the world in both religious and non-religious societies. Psychiatrists are searching for ways to explain the vivid memories of another life that children describe. Although it is difficult toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She depicts a memory of being pushed into a river by her brother and drowning (Bering). These memories of brutal endings of a past life provide evidence for the idea that one may be reborn in a new body. Along with the frequent pattern of violent deaths within past life memories, the age of these cases is repeatedly somewhere between the ages of two and six. Memories of past lives more frequently appear in adolescents than adults; often the childââ¬â¢s reincarnation stories fade away with age. The amount of cases of reincarnation reported decrease in adults. Many ââ¬Å"skeptics of reincarnation cases often allege that parents shape their childrenââ¬â¢s behaviorâ⬠(Matlock). It is difficult to know what goes on inside a childââ¬â¢s mind and whether or not they are making up these stories to seek attention. There are many things that these children just couldnââ¬â¢t know without living that life before. Additionally, professor of psychology at the University of Iceland- Erlendur Haraldsson- believes that children commonly allege that their current parents are not their real parents (Haraldsson). Providing more verification for the relation of age to reincarnation, Stevenson notices that ââ¬Å"there is only a brief window of time- between the ages of two and five- in which children retain these reminiscencesâ⬠(Beri ng). string(245) " high levels of power distance than in cultures low in power distance; and \(d\) negative reactions from supervisors in high power-distance cultures generate more negative reactions among workers than is the case in low power-distance cultures\." Work Motivation Theory and Research at The Dawn Of The Twenty-First Century Based on this journal, the writers examine progress made in theory and research on needs, traits, values, cognition, and affect as well as three bodies of literature dealing with the context of motivation: national culture, job design, and models of person environment fit. They focus primarily on work reported between 1993 and 2003, concluding that goal setting, social cognitive, and organizational justice theories are the three most important approaches to work motivation to appear in the last 30 years. The writers reach 10 generally positive conclusions regarding predicting, understanding, and influencing work motivation in the new millennium. We will write a custom essay sample on Work Motivation or any similar topic only for you Order Now Miner (2003) concluded that motivation continues to hold a significant position in the eyes of scholars. Minerââ¬â¢s conclusion is based on a comparison with other middle range theories of organizational behavior (OB). The question remains on an absolute standard, motivation theory and research have fared well over the last quarter of a century. In answering this question, we provide a definition of the construct and an assessment of how the field of motivation in the workplace has evolved and progressed since the year in which the last chapter devoted exclusively to this topic appeared in the Annual Review of Psychology (ARP). We selectively review theory and research, emphasizing work published in the past decade, 1993ââ¬â2003, with special emphasis given to research on contextual effects and mediating mechanisms. Work motivation is a set of energetic forces that originate both within as well as beyond an individualââ¬â¢s being, to initiate work-related behavior and to determine its form, direction, intensity, and duration (Pinder 1998). where motivation is a process resulting from the interaction between the individual and the environment. However, because of space limitations, the writers just focus on national culture, job design characteristics, and person-environment fit, omitting reviews of other exogenous sources of motivation. MOTIVATIONAL FRAMEWORK The framework used in reviewing the literature is consistent with Locke Henne(1986). Needs is followed by a focus on (b) personal traits. An individual difference variable rooted in needs is (c) values. Because context affects the extent to which needs are met and values are fulfilled, emphasis is given to (d) national culture, (e) job design characteristics, and (f) person context fit. Needs and values affect (g) cognition, particularly goals. Cognition plays an integral role in each of these concepts. Although (h) affective reactions need not depend on cognition (Bandura 1997), the two usually are reciprocally related (Lord Kanfer 2002). Finally, affect is influenced by culture as well as by organizational norms (Lord Harvey 2002). We close with an (i) assessment of progress in the field since 1977. NEEDS Aslam et al. (2000) presented a process-based analysis of need structure and need salience derived from the social identity approach to organizational behavior. When personal identity is salient, needs to self- actualize and to enhance self esteem through personal advancement and growth become dominant. When social identity is salient, the need to enhance group based self-esteem through a sense of relatedness, respect, peer recognition, and attainment of group goals dominate. They stated that McGregorââ¬â¢s (1960) Theory Y assumptions apply when the supervisor and employee share the same identity; Theory X assumptions apply when they do not do so. 2 People are motivated to attain goals that are compatible with their self-identity. Needs associated with a specific group membership are internalized; they serve as a guide for behavior in a specific working context. Need-based theories explain why a person must act; they do not explain why specific actions are chosen in specific situations to obtain specific outcomes. Moreover, they do not easily account for individual differences. Hence, along with increased attention to needs, there has also been a resurgence of interest in individual differences, particularly with regard to the effects of job characteristics on employee motivation. TRAITS In summary, the importance of personality in predicting, understanding, and influencing choice, affect, and performance has been shown, as well as the importance of job characteristics (e. g. , autonomy) as a mediator/moderator. An issue identified by Locke Latham (2004) that has yet to be addressed is how general variables such as personality are applied to and are mediated by task and situationally specific variables in affecting performance, or how they are moderated by situations and affect situational structuring and choice. Locke (2001) showed that values and personality work through goals and self-efficacy to influence performance. Yet it is likely that some trait effects are direct and thus are not mediated. Research is needed on if, when, and why this occurs VALUES Values are rooted in needs and provide a principal basis for goals (Locke Henne 1986). Locke Henne (1986) argued that values are inherent in most work moti- vation theories. These theories focus on the influence of one or several particu- lar values, such as perceptions of fairness on action or on the effects of values in general (expectancy theory). CONTEXT As a result of globalization, however, values have been studied within the context of a personââ¬â¢s culture and job as well as person-environment fit. National Culture In an attempt to tie together needs and values, Steers Sanchez-Runde (2002) stated that national culture determines three key sets of distal sources of motivation: (a) peopleââ¬â¢s self-concept, including personal beliefs, needs, and values; (b) norms about work ethic and the nature of ââ¬Å"achievement,â⬠tolerance for ambiguity, locus of control, etc. ; and (c) ââ¬Å"environmental factorsâ⬠. Based on their conceptual model, the authors concluded that these distal factors influence self-efficacy beliefs, work motivation levels, and goals, as well as the nature of incentives and disincentives to perform. Building on research findings of other scholars, Leung (2001) has offered four hypotheses for further research: (a) work teams in collectivistic cultures have higher levels of unconditional benevolence and positive social identity that, in turn, lead to higher levels of in-group involvement than is the case for groups that value ndividualism; (b) productivity and performance levels are more homogenous (not necessarily higher or lower) in collectivistic cultures than in individualistic cultures; (c) motivational strategies by superiors have more effect on subordinates in cultures with high levels of power distance than in cultures low in power distance; and (d) negative reactions from supervisors in high power-distance cultures generate more negative reactions among workers than is the case in low power-distance cultures. You read "Work Motivation" in category "Essay examples" Job Design Characteristics Gustafson Mumford (1995) reported that the ability of personality measures to predict performance as well as satisfaction increases when characteristics of a job are taken into account. Job autonomy can facilitate the time necessary for learning and development, which in turn improves job performance (Wall Jackson 1995). Cordery (1997) argued the necessity of differentiating the importance of three dimensions of job autonomy, namely (a) method control as defined by the amount of discretion one has over the way in which work is performed, (b) timing control in terms of the influence one has over scheduling of work, and (c) discretion in setting performance goals. He found four interrelated dimensions that affect job autonomy, namely the extent to which the supervisor (a) provides clear attainable goals, (b) exerts control over work activities, (c) ensures that the requisite resources are available, and (d) gives timely accurate feedback on progress toward goal attainment. PERSON CONTEXT-FIT The basic assumption underlying these models is that the relationship between person variables (such as needs or values) and both individual and organizational outcomes is contingent upon various features of the environment (such as the job, the organization, or culture). These models originated from Shafferââ¬â¢s (1953). He used Murrayââ¬â¢s (1938) needs to develop a goodness-of-fit model that takes into account individual differences in needs as well as the characteristics of jobs. Cable ; DeRue (2002), through a confirmatory factor analysis, found that employees differentiate among three varieties of fit: (a) person-environment fit (in which the focus is on organizational outcomes such as organizational identification and turnover decisions); (b) ââ¬Å"needs-suppliesâ⬠fit (in which the primary focus is on career-related outcomes such as employee satisfaction) and (c) job demandsââ¬âemployee abilities fit. COGNITION As Locke ; Henne (1986) observed, cognition is inherent in motivation. The sensations of pleasure and pain are informational. Based on needs, values, and the situational context, people set goals and strategize ways to attain them. Goal-Setting Theory A meta-analysis by Zetik ; Stuhlmacher (2002) revealed that negotiators who have specific, challenging, and conflicting goals consistently achieve higher profits than those with no goals. Consistent with goal-setting theory, the higher the goal, the higher the outcome. No effect was found for participation in setting goals. Contextual Conditions Seijts ; Latham (2000b) examined the applicability of goal-setting principles when personal goals are potentially incompatible with those of the group. They found that social dilemmas are boundary conditions for the usual positive effects of goal setting. Self-enhancing personal goals have a detrimental effect on a groupââ¬â¢s performance. Audia et al. (2000) found that past success increased strategic decision makersââ¬â¢ satisfaction, and satisfaction led them to increase their past strategies. Higher satisfaction was associated with higher self-efficacy and higher performance goals that increased dysfunctional persistence subsequent to a radical change in the environment. Implementation Intentions and Auto-Motive Goals Gollwitzer (1999) found that goal intentions that are accompanied by implementation intentions on tasks that are complex for people lead to a higher rate of goal attainment than do goal intentions only. An implementation intention is a mental link that is created between a specific future situation and the intended goal-directed response. Thus, it is subordinate to goal intention. Implementation intentions specify when, where, and how behavior is likely to lead to goal attainment. By forming implementation intentions, people strategically switch from conscious effortful control of their goal-directed behavior to being automatically controlled by situational cues. Bargh ; Ferguson (2000) summarized research findings that show that automatic or nonconscious goals produce the same outcomes as conscious goal pursuit in information processing, memory storage, social behavior, and task performance, as well as in self efficacy, self evaluation, and mood state. Feedback Ashford et al. (2003) stated that the processing of feedback likely involves monitoring the environment in an automatic preconscious fashion through visual, auditory, and relational cues. In their enumerative review, Ashford ; Black (1996) also suggested three primary motives for feedback seeking: instrumental to attain a goal and perform well, ego-based to defend or enhance oneââ¬â¢s ego, and image-based to protect or enhance the impression others have of oneself. Self-Regulation Goal setting and feedback seeking in relation to goals are the core of self-regulation (Latham ; Locke 1991). Self-regulatory processes supporting goal implementation were examined by Gollwitzer ; Bayer (1999). They offered a time perspective on goal striving and self-regulatory processes as mediating the effects of intentions on behavior. The latter consists of four phases: predecisional (choosing among competing wishes, based on expected value); preactional (forming implementation intentions in the service of the goal intention); actional (bringing goal direct actions to a successful end); and postactional (evaluation as to whether further action is necessary) Expectancy Theory After reviewing the literature, Ambrose ; Kulik (1999) concluded that little or no advances have been made in expectancy theory research in the past decade. Ambrose ; Kulik concluded that there are few theoretical or applied reasons for additional research on the application of this theory to organizational behavior Social Cognitive Theory SCT research shows empirically that the effect of environmental antecedents and consequences are mediated by cognitive variables. SCT emphasizes dual control systems in the self-regulation of motivation, namely a proactive discrepancy production system that works in concert with a reactive discrepancy reduction system (Bandura 2001). Thus, people are motivated by the foresight of goals, not just the hindsight of shortfalls. A specific high goal creates negative discrepancies to be mastered. Effort and resources are mobilized based on anticipatory estimates of what is necessary for goal attainment. AFFECT/EMOTION Mowday ; Sutton (1993) argued against an overemphasis on cognition in the study of motivation. This is because moods and emotions influence the attainment of complex long-term goals (Lord ; Kanfer 2002) and are interrelated with the other constructs we have discussed. Erez ; Isen (2002) showed that people with higher levels of positive affect exhibited higher levels of persistence, effort, self-reported motivation, and performance on two different tasks. Positive affect was associated with higher levels of valence and expectancy beliefs at these tasks as well as higher levels of instrumentality beliefs at one of them. Organizational Justice A significant body of research on work motivation that has appeared since Korman et al. ââ¬â¢s 1977 review is conceptualizations of organizational justice (Greenberg 1987). These studies, based on sociolegal research of disputantsââ¬â¢ reactions to a conflict resolution, supplement Adamââ¬â¢s equity theory, the fundamental idea of which is that individuals develop beliefs about the inputs they provide in their employment relationship as well as about the outcomes they receive in return, and they form attitudes about the ratio between inputs and outcomes in relation to the corresponding ratios they perceive among comparison others. The premise of organizational justice is that fair procedures enhance employee acceptance of organizational outcomes. second premise, namely that in addition to being fair, leaders must be perceived as fair with regard to outcomes and processes that serve an important psychological need (Greenberg 1990). CONCLUSIONS First, three theories dominate the motivation literature: goal-setting, social cognitive, and organizational justice. Second, whereas theory and research in the third quarter of the twentieth century focused almost exclusively on cognition (Latham ; Budworth 2004), this is no longer true. Third, the ability to predict, understand, and influence motivation in the workplace has increased significantly as a result of the attention that has been given to all rather than only a few aspects of an employeeââ¬â¢s motivation. Fourth, whereas the dependent variables historically studied were limited to traditional measures of job performance and satisfaction, todayââ¬â¢s dependent variables range from citizenship to counterproductive behavior. Fifth, Cronbachââ¬â¢s (1957) plea a half century ago for experimental and correlational psychology to combine forces has been heeded. Sixth, the importance of context to motivation has been recognized much more in recent years than in the past; so much so that an additional chapter could be devoted to it. Seventh, these advances in the study of motivation may reflect the fact that this subject is no longer restricted to the research findings of North Americans. Eighth, behavioral scientists in the latter half of the twentieth century responded positively to William Jamesââ¬â¢ exhortation to systematically study consciousness. Ninth, the antagonisms among theorists that existed throughout much of the twentieth century have either disappeared or have been minimized. Tenth, the nomological nets related to work motivation constructs are thicker and tighter than ever before, but the size of the aggregate net (metaphorically speaking) is not growing at a rate commensurate with the energy that scholars and practitioners have invested since 1977. Accordingly, Steers (2001) recently recognized the limitations of current theory and research in work motivation, and issued a call for groundbreaking papers for publication in a special edition of the Academy of Management Review in 2004. It is too soon to assess whether any of the papers published in response to his call will How to cite Work Motivation, Essay examples
